The recent launch of the Space Shuttle had a unique story surrounding it. Apparently during lift off the shuttle itself was struck by a bird. NASA announce they would take the better part of the day to go over the shuttle with a fine tooth comb to make sure there is no damage to the tiles that may cause a problem during re-entry.
First, let me say that I’m all for the safety of these brave astronauts. Everything should be done to make sure they return to this planet safely. That being said… I find it odd that with the millions and millions of dollars spent on the Space Shuttle that it isn’t armed with material that could withstand the impact of a bird. Last fall, as I was driving along minding my own business a pheasant flew in front of me and decided to commit suicide by breaking the grill of my truck. Yes, I had to replace the damaged grill and there were feathers everywhere… but my truck didn’t blow up on the re-entry to my driveway.
