A Future In The Jewelry Business
Give me a minute to tell the tale of a friend of mine. I had no idea this event would lead her to a point of being in need of an affordable wholesale fashion jewelry supplier. She was working in an insurance agency as the assistant to a claims adjustor. When she would come home from work, the first half hour would be filled with a continuous onslaught of complaints regarding her job and how unrewarding it was for her. She is a very creative person and found the work to be monotonous and boring. She also felt trapped because she didn’t think she could find another job that would pay as much and she, like everyone else, had bills to pay.
Because of her creativity, and the fact that she was at one time rather “crafty”, her mother decided to enroll her in a fun night class at a local community college. She and her mother attended for six weeks learning different methods of making your own jewelry. This proved to be the creative outlet that she needed. With her creative juices flowing, she still hated her job, but now had an activity to pursue and come home to.
After a few months of this new hobby, I commented to her that her apartment was being overtaken by all of her jewelry. It was great stuff, but she couldn’t possibly wear it all and what was she going to do with it. She confided that she had started to worry and borderline stress about that same issue. There was a local once-a-month street fair coming up and I recommended she setup shop and try to sell some of it, even if she just broke even it would give her more money for raw materials and clear some space in her apartment. She was apprehensive at first until I promised I would help. Long story short, on that one Saturday morning she made the same amount of money that it took her almost two weeks to make at her office job. The next month she did the street fair again and had even better results.
Now she is a regular at the street fair, and also has her jewelry showing in 3-4 local boutiques here in town. Her sales are high enough that she cannot make all the replacement jewelry herself and orders in fully made pieces in addition to the raw materials. And, best of all she no longer works in that office job she hated. She’s a much happier person and has tons less stress.
There is a market for those who want to make it on their own in the jewelry business.
