There is much being made today of the proposed gas tax holiday. This is supported by Senators John McCain and Hillary Clinton as well as a number of other people in Washington D.C. Barack Obama does not support it and calls it pandering. I think he’s right, but sometimes politically, pandering works. It is true that based on your lifestyle and driving habits, the gas tax holiday will probably amount to a savings of about $40 - $100 over the course of the summer. Not really enough to make a huge difference in people’s lives. And it may be less, because the oil companies can always just raise their prices to get more profits during this time as well. In a day when it cost me $65 to fill my tank up, $50 in savings over three months is really not that big of a deal. Give me a solution that truly solves the gas price problem, then I’ll pay attention more.
You want to offer a true gas tax holiday? Send everyone in America to Hawaii for a week and forward the bill to Exxon… now, that’s a gas tax holiday I can get behind.
